The selected artists in this show explore women, rhythm, and the human place in nature.
"Frontier Mythology" by Cary Peppermint & Christine Nadir - US 5:00 2007
“A mobile, solar-powered environmental digital video and FM radio installation made of recycled shipping pallets…”Frontier Mythology” is concerned with the intersections and exchanges between the categories and definitions of nature, wilderness, ‘unnatural’ and built environments, and technology.”
"It Hurts" by Hester Scheurwater - Rotterdam, Holland 1:45 2006
The repeatedly distorted, primate behaviour of an (ani)female carrying her baby, reflecting the pain and suffering provoked by the mother/child relationship.
"Astral Chorus" by Alexia de Ville de Goyet - Bruxelles, Belhum 11:20 2007
"Three portraits of women of different ages, which scroll in the same house, and ask themselves loud questions about social games, education, beauty, love and life...They do not cross each other, but succeed one another as three edges of the same life."
"Magic Woman" by Kisito Assangni - Paris, France 1:30 2005
"A lady's bottom [is] now moving differently with sticker papers."
"Room 323" by Sharon Mooney - Brooklyn, NY 8:30 2005
“This three-part video examines the ability of space to affect the thoughts and actions of those who exist therein. Threaded through all three stories are claustrophobic reactions to the characters’ own manipulations of their environment.”
"Promenade" by Jun'ichiro ISHII - Paris, France 8:30 2007
This video is tied to the site-specific installation project "Rue de L'infinite". Drawing this ancient symbol in to a natural landscape, my intent was to create a non-functioning sidewalk...the notion of non-function, or without meaning in this case, was a question I posed to the increasing modern consumerism that results from the utopian yearnings sought after by humans.
"Cerebratorium" by Bryan Lauch - Pittsburg, PA 3:50
“Inspired by transformative celebrational ceremony, the sequence, reversed, re-contextualizes the physics of smashing glass. Rhythmically, 76 bottles are un-smashed and re-collected”
"The Island" by Johanna Torkkola - Helsinki, Finland 6:00 2005
"...portrays a young woman facing a moment of transition in her life...wearing an old wedding dress she arrives to a rough and secluded island...and facing the direction she just came from, the woman sheds her dress."
15 Minute Break featuring:
"Grasp iv" by Kjell Bjorgeengen - Oslo, Norway 10:00 2004
"I'm a New York Based Artist" - Pierre Yves Clouin - Paris, France 2:12 2007
"Que sera sera. What will be will be."
"The Epicene" - JoEllen Martinson & William Rees - Minneapolis, MN 4:00 2007
God-like art stars Bruno and Filippa are seduced by the strange, androgynous beauty of their final creation, The Epicene, and are ultimately destroyed in this strange movie-myth.
"Kempinski" by Neil Beloufa - Brooklyn, NY 13:58 2007
“A melodic editing in a hypnotic and mystic science fiction documentary”
"Dans La Poubelle" by Frederic Lavoie - Quebec Canada 1:30 2007
“A mass of objects…some practical…some more personal…the garbage bin is bottomless…a singular ritual…an act of exorcism…or….?”
"Growing Plants" by Miro Soares - Grenoble / France 2:10 2007
Action in which the artist integrates himself to the plants on the wall. The body as extension.
"TREASURE" by Lili White - New York, NY 3:30 2005
An immigrant searches for water while building a city on a beach. Overlaid images including Las Vegas, a neighboring desert water spring (now defunct), and the Hoover Dam, present an ominous mood.
"Station Polaire" by Tuomo Kangasmaa - Oulu, Finland 1:45 2007
"In this video, I return to the memories of an arctic ice station. The cold war is over and the threats are new. I observe the signs possibly indicating the impending climate change.
"What shall I draw? I don't know how to draw: 10ten" by Phil Sawdon - Leicestershire, UK 2:12 2007
"...a moving image sequence that through its format and content aspires to be tautological. The sequence questions the questions within various drawings methodologies and specifically the questions that ask what drawing is."
"Suolaista Lunta" (Salty Snow)" by Maarit Suomi-Vaananen - Helsinki, Finland 8:40 2007
***US PREMIERE*** “at present, every fourth Finnish woman aged over 35 is childless, as is every fifth couple…as hopes, expectations and disappointments become interwoven, life feels fragile and vulnerable, and, at times, the shared sorrow is experienced separately.”
